What’s the problem?
A lot of data centers now using 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) connections need more
bandwidth to handle the huge increase in e.g. cloud-based services.
This either means adding more 10GE ports, boosting the capacity per port,
or upgrading to 40GE.
Upgrading to 40GE (a 4 x 10Gbps lane technology) is expensive, and the power
consumption is also high which pushes up operating costs.
25GE is the solution!
A better solution is the newly standardized single lane 25GE technology.
It’s less expensive than adding more 10G ports and provides 2.5 times more
capacity per port – without pushing power consumption through the roof.
Dual lane 50GE (2x25Gbps) is also standardized. It offers 25% more capacity
than 40GE, but overall operating costs are lower as it has fewer lanes.
In fact, the advantages of using 25GE and 50GE are so convincing
that these speeds are expected to be used in a quarter of the
world’s data centers by 2020.
