How to use Safire to performance test a firewall

The following step-by-step instruction demonstrates how to quickly run a performance test on a NGFW using Safire v2.4.1.

STEP 1:

CONNECT

Use a web browser to connect to Safire live demo public URL:

https://safire-demo.xenanetworks.com:8080

STEP 2:

LOGIN

Use these credentials to login:

Username: demo
Password: demo1234

(If you can’t login or are disconnected, it is because the Safire tester is undergoing maintenance.)

STEP 3:

DASHBOARD

The Safire dashboard lets you:

  1. 1. Create a new test config/open an existing test config
  2. 2. Open test in progress
  3. 3. Create traffic profiles
  4. 4. Download and analyze test report
  5. 5. Configure chassis settings

Click #1 “Testing > Testing Cases” to start creating a new test case.

STEP 4:

CREATE TEST CASE

Click the blue “Create New Test +” button (top-right).

STEP 5:

CONFIGURE TEST CASE

For this demo:

#1 Choose the first option: “Enterprise Internal Segmentation”.

#2 Select “Xena Firewall Under Test” as the firewall under test in the drop-down list.

#3 Configure testbed.

– Enter 39.0.0.1/8 to firewall’s segment A interface.

– Enter 40.0.0.1/8 to firewall’s segment B interface.

STEP 6:

PREVIEW AND SAVE TEST CONFIGURATION

Check the test case configuration, Click “CREATE

Give your test case a name. Click “SAVE”.

STEP 7:

CHOOSE TRAFFIC PROFILE AND RUN THE TEST

On the left of the screen, choose ENT. Internal Segmentation Mix (Large) in the tab called MAIN.

Optionally, change the test iteration duration to 1 min 30 sec in the pop-up dialog window.

When you are ready, click the blue “Run” button in the top-right corner.

Only one test can be run at a time – if someone else is running a test, you will have to wait until it is finished.

STEP 8:

DOWNLOAD REPORT

Use the navigation side bar on the right to go to Dashboard > Analysis > Test Reports.

Select your test result and download the PDF report you want by clicking “DOWNLOAD REPORT

STEP 9:

CUSTOMIZE TRAFFIC PROFILE

Use the navigation side bar again to go to Dashboard > Testing > Traffic Profiles.

1. Select ENT. Internal Segmentation Mix (L).

2. Click “Create From +”.

3. Disable Facebook to exclude this application from the traffic profile.

4. Select “Enterprise Internal Segmentation” for the network topology.

5. Click “CREATE” and enter a name to save the traffic profile.
